A dating service has been set up for people with disabilities and mental health issues in Cornwall. James Blewett and Sam Gallaspy, who both have experience working with people with learning difficulties, started Hand in Hand to help individuals find friendship, companionship and love. Sam thought of the idea whilst working at a home with 14 residents with different severities of learning disabilities, a few of whom were looking for love.
After trying to help them use dating agencies, none of which worked out, Sam decided to set up his own with James, targeting Cornwall specifically. Based in Penzance, Hand in Hand offers a unique service by handpicking potential matches, rather than using a database. If two clients want to meet, Hand in Hand offers to find a ‘safe zone’ for them as well as a chaperone service, to help people feel safe.
He said: “If you find it hard to mingle with other people, it’s even harder to try and find someone that you’re genuinely looking for. Sam and James also want to hold a function in Truro every three months for people to meet up and get used to being around others. For more information about Hand in Hand, head to their website. A dating agency designed to give adults with learning disabilities a better chance of finding love is set to be launched near Herne Bay. Care worker Holly Leadbetter decided to create Aiding Love after witnessing the difficulties many of her clients experience when trying to meet new people. She says that, currently, adults with learning disabilities living across the district have few opportunities to socialise with new groups of people and meet potential suitors.
Ms Leadbetter knows of several couples who have met because they have been supported by the same companies, or attended the same day services or schools – but says many have not been so fortunate. The care worker founded the dating service – which will be open to people across the Canterbury district and Thanet – after one of her clients suggested the idea. Ms Leadbetter says users will be matched with another person once a month and be able to attend regular events.

Dating agencies are a small, but growing sector of social care provision for people with intellectual disabilities. A strong case is made for the proliferation of such services. Historically, it was difficult for adults with intellectual disabilities to form relationships of their own choosing [ 1 , 2 ].
Negative attitudes towards their suitability for, and capabilities regarding, relationships and sexuality led to eugenic practices such as institutionalization including segregated living , forced abortion and compulsory sterilization in many countries around the world [ 3 , 4 ].

Hayley Ostler, 29, runs a project where she plays Cupid to those who need a little help in the romance department…. Sitting on the edge of the sofa, I watched the young couple on TV. As they ate ice cream and made nervous small talk, I rooted for them. And when they later swapped numbers and kissed goodbye, I beamed with pride. As a matchmaker for people with learning disabilities, I regularly help would-be boyfriends and girlfriends, like Luke and Alice, find love.
That episode showed me phoning Luke, a member of the dating project I run, to suggest a date with Alice, also a member. After I showed them to their table, then sat at the other end of the restaurant in case they needed me, there were a few awkward silences. They just clicked. The fact he had a disability was never an issue to me. I started off volunteering for the dating project eight years ago.
I loved it from day one.
